Counter description
This fish counter is located at the beautiful Sveðjufoss waterfall on the Langá river.
Renowned for its crystal-clear water and strong salmon population, Langá originates from Lake Langavatn and carves its path through the stunning landscapes of the Mýrar region. The counter is positioned within the fishway built alongside the waterfall. Constructed in 1966, this is one of the largest fishways in Iceland and is essential for helping fish continue their upstream journey.
The salmon run here has been monitored with a fish counter since 2000. Data from this counter is provided by Hafrannsóknastofnun (the Icelandic Marine and Freshwater Research Institute) to monitor the migration and health of fish stocks in this vital waterway.

Fish Counting
This page presents uninterpreted and unreviewed live data from the fish counter at Sveðjufoss. The fish counter is a TiVA FC model.
The fish counter uses advanced camera technology in combination with artificial intelligence in the form of specially trained fish algorithms to identify and classify fish. The system processes all video streams in real time and only counts fish that make a complete passage through the fish counter.
Measuring Fish
The counter is equipped with several top-quality cameras. One of these is a 3D camera that, with the help of software, enables size measurement of fish with very high accuracy (+/- 2 cm).
TiVA FC measures the size of the fish using a 3D camera and advanced software.
Interpreting Data
All data collected from the fish counter in Sveðjufoss is processed in real time by the AI model. Currently, the software can identify +15 of the most common fish species with high precision. These assessments are then verified to ensure the results.
This analysis and interpretation work is carried out continuously in specially developed software where all results are also stored. The software has been developed as a working tool to facilitate operational monitoring, remote data capture, data backup, review, interpretation and storage of data, as well as presentation of finished results and compilations.
Operation of the Counter
The practical operation and cleaning of the equipment is usually handled by local operating personnel. Monitoring and data capture are handled remotely by Tiva AB. The operation of the fish counter's various components is continuously monitored and logged. In the event of short operational interruptions, the unmonitored fish migration is reconstructed through rule-based interpolation processes and information from supplementary monitoring systems.
All unreviewed results from the fish counter are continuously updated automatically and presented on this page. The reviewed and interpreted data is reported continuously via a specific interface that is updated regularly and finally confirmed in a report at the end of the year. Currently, this interface is not available to the public.
